The History of Sacramento, CA

Being the capital city of the State of California, the seat for the Sacramento County, and the central city for the four –county Sacramento metropolitan area, there is no doubt that Sacramento is a city with a rich history. It lies on a 99.2 square miles, in which 2 square miles is water and 97. 2 is land. Since it is located at the confluence of the American River and the Sacramento River, it is popularly known to the locals as the River City.

The history of the city began when John Sutter set foot at the confluence of the American River and the Sacramento River in 1939. In an effort to establish an agricultural community, Sutter developed the Sutter’s Fort. This attracted investors who were looking for opportunities.

In 1848, this area made a significant development when gold was discovered in neighboring foothills. This transformed the community at Sutter’s Fort from an agricultural Community to a mining and trading one. This was later called the ‘Gold Rush.’

During the gold rush season, the community in this area built houses out of wood and covered them with canvas. The structures were often destroyed by raging fires, and this lead to the development of the first ever volunteer fire department on the western side of the United States.

The fact that the city had a huge waterfront location did not always come as a blessing. The area was prone to flooding, a calamity that hit the community here several times. This made developers to come up with a plan to raise the city, and this came into being after the devastating flood that swept buildings across the city.

In 1884, the California State Legislature moved to the city of Sacramento in California, and the city was named the state capital in 1879.

The blend of the new status and strategic location of the city led to the abrupt development of the city. Population increased and businesses boomed. Railway companies started linking the city with other areas, and in no time, Sacramento became a major transportation and distribution point as well as the home of great attractions such as Sacramento – Railroad Museum. By the end of the 20th century, the city had grown rapidly, and population increased. In the 21st century, this city is highly civilized. It is a technological hub that is an admiration of many all over the world. People come here for business, education, and opportunities. Concrete is one of the world’s most versatile and durable construction materials. And with a price point that fits nicely into all budgets, it is no surprise that it is used in every type of project imaginable.

Install A Top Notch Drainage Infrastructure

Extending the life of concrete starts before the concrete is even poured. This happens by promoting an elite drainage infrastructure that will not let water erode, stain, or mar your concrete in any way.

Always make sure that the surrounding landscaping is sloped slightly away from your concrete surfaces. Place outdoor drainage grates throughout your landscaping to ensure that heavy runoff is accounted for before it reaches the concrete. If you are building a sidewalk, you may need to add some substrate prior to pouring to guarantee that water flows off of the sidewalk. If this is not feasible, be sure to add some slot drains to the concrete to keep water from standing. 

Clear Away Any Standing Debris 

It is important to be proactive in keeping concrete clear at all times. The longer debris sits, the greater the likelihood that the concrete’s seal is tested and a stain sets in. 

Therefore, it is important to immediately sweep away any grass clippings, dirt, sand, or any other type of material that may get compacted into the concrete. If you live in an area that receives snowfall, be sure to shovel as soon as possible. Just be careful about plowing too close to the surface, as sharp plow edges can easily nick concrete surfaces and open the door for bigger issues.

Clean the Surface At Least Annually

Even for those who stay ahead of keeping concrete clear, there are small particles and microorganisms that get embedded into the cracks and grooves on a concrete surface. These can add up over time. As such, it is important to clean concrete surfaces once or twice a year. Use a pressure washer to knock free any embedded particles and drive them off of the surface. There is no need to mix any chemicals into the pressure washer. Plain water is fine in most cases, but a mild detergent would be acceptable to help break down any debris that is heavily caked on. 

The annual clean is also a great time to seal the concrete. This will help prevent moisture ingress and staining. When choosing a sealer, it is a good idea to select a high-grade acrylic sealer that will bond to both the concrete and any previous sealer that is still intact. 

Immediately Attend To Any Spills

Oil leaks, dropped food, or any other type of spill that could cause a grease stain shouldn’t wait until tomorrow. They need immediate attention. Use a non-corrosive concrete cleaner to make sure any staining agents are no longer bonded to the surface. The best cleaning products will break down stains that have fully set in–it will just take a lot more work than if you attend to spills immediately.

Avoid Using De-Icing Chemicals

There are a lot of fancy ice melt products on the market these days. While they add convenience in quickly breaking down standing ice, they are not the best option for prolonging the life of your concrete.

De-icing products rapidly melt ice and introduce large amounts of water to the concrete. Because the remaining ice inhibits the runoff of this water, puddles start standing and are more likely to get absorbed by the concrete. If you get another cold night and this standing water starts to freeze again, it can cause permanent damage to the concrete.

If you need traction on your concrete, it is better to apply sand. Just remember to sweep it away once the ice is completely gone.

Lift the Concrete As Necessary

Despite your best efforts, there will be some times when the forces of nature strike in a major way. This can wash away substrate and cause the concrete to crack, slope, or buckle.

Rather than completely replace the concrete surface, there are some innovative concrete lifting techniques that can restore damaged sections. Using a series of small holes drilled into the surface, a polyurethane foam is pumped into the substrate. It expands and lifts the buckled concrete back to desired levels. The concrete is then patched up to repair the holes and cracks to get your concrete looking like new again.

Concrete Reinforcement: Reinforcing Your Structures for Added Strength

Concrete is one of the most durable, versatile, and classy building materials in the world. As a result, it should come as no surprise that it is also one of the most widely used.

ICF framing offers everything you would want to see for sustainable construction. Its elite air and moisture barriers make it a strong choice to withstand strong winds and driving rains, with steel reinforcement providing shear support that may undermine basic concrete structures. The concrete walls offer unmatched fire and pest resistance as well. For these reasons, ICF framing has been used to rebuild neighborhoods around the country that have been ravaged by natural disasters. 

Concrete Crystallization

If there is a knock against concrete, it is that unsealed concrete surfaces have a tendency to be a bit porous. This is common to all types of masonry surfaces and requires some extra attention to sealing to prevent unwanted water ingress. However, much of this concern can be alleviated by leveraging modern innovations in crystalline waterproofers.

Chemical crystallization products offer a more long-lasting solution to concrete porosity. It helps form hard crystals deep at the microstructural level that make it impossible for water to bypass. Crystallization chemicals interact with the natural byproducts of cement hydration to form an impermeable barrier that stops water and other types of corrosive liquids from entering the concrete. The advantages of this type of concrete waterproofing over membranes and surface coatings are numerous:

Safety: (if polyavastic)

ALWAYS wear a respirator with a 3M 6001 Organic Vapor Cartridge when working with polyavastic, whether blending, troweling or topcoating. Be sure to follow the cartridge replacement plan. Wear chemical goggles when blending the polyavastic. Wear nitrile gloves when handling the polyavastic.

Step 1

The first step is to prepare the surface and remove any existing coating or concrete laitance. The surface needs to be porous and able to absorb the adhesive binder. You can do this simple test – pour a little solvent on it and see if it soaks in. If the solvent lays on the surface than you need to scratch up the surface further. Use Xylene or M.E.K. as the solvent – you will also use this to keep your tools clean.

Step 2

The next step is to prime the floor. Unless your floor has a moisture problem – then this primer step is skipped and you will use our Vapor Vent epoxy stone flooring method instead.

Step 3

Mark out your first section on the floor so you know how much area each kit needs to cover. Make sure your gauge rake is set to the proper depth – which is usually 1/8″ more than the desired thickness. You may need to mark out the next section before blending each new batch until you are confident that you are getting the right coverage.

32 square feet per kit at a depth of 3/8″ 24 square feet per kit at a depth of 1/2″ (we recommend a depth of 1/2″ for pools, patios and walkways) 16 square feet per kit at a depth of 3/4″ (we recommend a depth of 3/4″ for driveways)

Step 4 (if epoxy)

Blending Instructions:

Add 2 quarts of Pebblestone Epoxy Part A into 1 quart of Pebblestone Epoxy Part B and blend thoroughly.

Pour the blend over 2 bags of pebbles.

Blend thoroughly.

Step 4 (if polyavastic)

Blending Instructions:

Pour the whole quart can of Polyavastic part B into the short-filled gallon can of Polyavastic part A and blend thoroughly.

Pour the blend over 2 bags of pebbles.

Blend thoroughly.

Step 5

Pour out the pebbles and spread them with the gauge rake to get a uniform coverage. Then use a finish trowel to smooth out the pebbles to make an even surface. Try to have an even finish with no trowel marks or stray rocks sticking up. It is easy to do a nice job, but it does take extra time. If you try to hurry it will not look nice.

Step 6

The next step is to let the pebblestone get hard. Indoor epoxy will be cured the next morning. Outdoor polyavastic will take an extra day to cure. Then scrape off any stray pebbles that are sticking up and sweep or blow off the floor to remove the extra pebbles.

Step 7 (if epoxy)

Topcoat Blending Instructions:

Add 2 quarts of Pebblestone Epoxy Part A into 1 quart of Pebblestone Epoxy Part B and blend thoroughly.

Roll an even topcoat over the pebblestone.

* Approximate coverage for 1 kit (3 quarts) of pebblestone epoxy (for topcoat) is 100 square feet.

Step 7 (if polyavastic)

Topcoat Blending Instructions:

Pour the whole quart can of Polyavastic part B into the short-filled gallon can of Polyavastic part A and blend thoroughly. Do not try to split the kit. If you must split a kit, be sure to throughly blend the part A before pouring it because some components of the part A will have settled to the bottom of the can. Then split by weight – 2 parts Polyavastic part B to 3 parts Polyavastic part A.

Pour the whole quart can of Polyavastic part B into the short-filled gallon can of Polyavastic part A and blend thoroughly.

Pour the blend over 2 bags of pebbles.

Blend thoroughly.

Step 5

Pour out the pebbles and spread them with the gauge rake to get a uniform coverage. Then use a finish trowel to smooth out the pebbles to make an even surface. Try to have an even finish with no trowel marks or stray rocks sticking up. It is easy to do a nice job, but it does take extra time. If you try to hurry it will not look nice.

Step 6

The next step is to let the pebblestone get hard. Indoor epoxy will be cured the next morning. Outdoor polyavastic will take an extra day to cure. Then scrape off any stray pebbles that are sticking up and sweep or blow off the floor to remove the extra pebbles.

Step 7 (if epoxy)

Topcoat Blending Instructions:

Add 2 quarts of Pebblestone Epoxy Part A into 1 quart of Pebblestone Epoxy Part B and blend thoroughly.

Roll an even topcoat over the pebblestone.

* Approximate coverage for 1 kit (3 quarts) of pebblestone epoxy (for topcoat) is 100 square feet.

Step 7 (if polyavastic)

Topcoat Blending Instructions:

Pour the whole quart can of Polyavastic part B into the short-filled gallon can of Polyavastic part A and blend thoroughly. Do not try to split the kit. If you must split a kit, be sure to throughly blend the part A before pouring it because some components of the part A will have settled to the bottom of the can. Then split by weight – 2 parts Polyavastic part B to 3 parts Polyavastic part A.
